Stüssy, the streetwear leader still on the crest of the wave

Stüssy, the streetwear leader still on the crest of the wave

Stüssy is a name and a guarantee, cleverly established as one of the first names in the world of streetwear - if not the first - still extremely popular today. Let's retrace its history up to the very latest collaborations, one coming out today.

Born from the ingenuity of Shawn Stussy in the early 1980s, it stands out as one of the forerunners of the movement, pioneering in embodying the passion for this subculture. Born in 1954, Shawn Stussy began his journey in Laguna Beach, California, creating surfboards and T-shirts with his surname imprinted on them. In 1984, the brand adopted its distinctive logo and later opened its first shop in New York, in collaboration with James Jebbia, the future founder of Supreme. It is no coincidence that it is the brands of Stüssy, Supreme and Palace that lead the way in the streetwear subculture, albeit in different ways.

Stüssy's innovation marked a turning point in the fashion industry, prompting his brand to quickly spread across the globe, receiving acclaim and of course followers, creating a global cultural phenomenon. This paved the way for a series of other brands that have left an indelible imprint in the history of this subculture; among them the afore mentioned Supreme itself, followed by sports brands such as Adidas and Nike, known for their production of sportswear that was later transformed into a symbol of urban fashion. An example before everyone's eyes is that of trainers, footwear born for physical activity but now a staple of urban casual wear.

Where did this great success come from? Well, part of Stüssy's success lies in this unchanged legend of the brand that has marked history for a full 40 years. However, the real driving force behind this constant momentum is not just the image of an enduring heritage, but instead the extraordinary quality of its products.

The brand distinguishes itself from its competitors by the over-the-top taste of garments that have a streetwear urgency but with a ready-to-wear touch. The surrounding world influences the brand and at the same time the brand influences the surrounding world. It draws inspiration from military clothing, workwear and the Californian beaches themselves, the place of its birth and inspiration. We see cracked logos, stone-washed coats and jeans, graphic prints that still refer to the 1980s, the year Stüssy was founded.

Between surfboards and skate culture, Stüssy doesn't forget to be a boss with collaborations too. At the beginning of March, he launched a collaboration with Converse and finally, the latest collaboration in the pot is with David Carson, an American graphic designer who has developed designs from Stüssy archive images using his own signature visual language. Stüssy & David Carson is available worldwide in selected Dover Street Market chapter shops and on eu.stussy.com from Friday 15 March at 10am.
