The classic shirt, now known by all as t-shirt, is an item of clothing made of cotton and packaged with sleeves of different lengths, classic or more particular cuts, in solid color or with multicolored patterns.

The history of the t-shirt begins in 1904, when the Cooper Underwear Company announces the arrival of a new product, an elastic cotton shirt, without buttons and extremely practical: a revolutionary garment, for all those men who had no wife and weren't expert in sewing. Its English name, however, derives both from the "T" shape that characterizes it, and from the initial letter of the word "training". In 1913, in fact, the American army felt the extraordinary versatility and comfort of the garment and decided to use it in the standard uniform of the Marines. This short-sleeved shirt was thus prepared to be used during the hard training of soldiers, and since then this "simple garment" first began to be part of the sports sector, and then became a real cult garment, generation after generation.

Having cleared its origins, the famous t-shirt has gained a prestigious reputation over time, managing to reach the universe of fashion and consequently, men's and women's wardrobes all over the world.

In the Fifties, Hollywood movie stars of the caliber of Marlon Brando and James Dean, wore the t-shirt consecrating it as a basic garment with short sleeves and round neckline, used under leather jackets. In this golden age, it's not just men who show off these t-shirts, but actresses like Marylin Monroe, choose to borrow them from the men's wardrobe, pairing t-shirts with high-waisted jeans. Today, recreating the looks in vogue in the Fifties is extremely simple for every woman, focusing on the solid color of the Federica Tosi or Elisabetta Franchi t-shirts and on the iconic flared skirts or pin-up shorts, so used in those years, all completed with a pair of wedges.

In the following decade, the t-shirt becomes the perfect way to give voice to the revolutions in progress, which affect the social context as much as the world of fashion. This is the moment in which the t-shirt transforms from a simple garment to a manifesto, suitable for displaying the slogans that portend the wave of change of the period. With a printed t-shirt by MSGM or Marni and a pair of flared jeans, or even better a miniskirt created in recent years by the English designer Mary Quant, the reference to the fantastic Sixties is just around the corner!

With the arrival of the Seventies, an even richer decade of contradictions, political tensions and generational conflicts begins. The flaming souls of these years burn with transgression and the punk style, today symbolized by the skulls printed on Alexander McQueen's t-shirts, takes over. Music also plays its part, with rock bands of the caliber of the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, which become the undisputed protagonists of t-shirts worn by fans from all over the world.
In addition to the motto "sex, drugs & rock'n'roll", the Seventies also represent a moment of strong interest in spirituality. It is also the time of diffusion of the Hippie culture, which juggles between floral and colorful patterns, which we find in the Alice + Olivia t-shirts, and in the fabrics of natural origin, which brands like Etro have always loved to use.
Finally, the Seventies bring with them revolutions also in the field of sexuality: the clearance of genres is masterfully interpreted by icons such as David Bowie who, through a glam-rock style, plays to redefine the boundaries between masculine and feminine.
The crazy and hedonistic spirit of this decade is dotted with the successes of disco music, the bearer of a sparkling style, evoked by The Attico t-shirts, which together with flared trousers and platform shoes, will make you dance to the rhythm of Le Freak!

After a decade of excesses, the t-shirt craze continues to develop following the fashions of the 80s, in which bright colors and bold looks are shown off by top models and especially by the queen of pop, Madonna. For women who like to dare, a leather miniskirt worn together with a Moschino, Isabel Marant or Marc Jacobs t-shirts, will be the perfect combination to bring back the memory of the unforgettable Eighties.

And instead… who has never felt nostalgia for the Nineties? Printed t-shirts with the faces of the favorites of that era, today among the most sought-after vintage products, are a real must of the period. Currently, there is no shortage of brands that propose revival of this unforgettable fashion, printing iconic images on short-sleeved shirts. An example are the Supreme t-shirts, which in addition to promoting genderless fashion with unisex garments, combine the recognizable red logo with photos of rappers, sport champions or movie stars. This is also the period in which the first short tops, or rather skimpy t-shirts, still beloved by the younger ones, begin to appear on the catwalks. In fact, among the models proposed in the latest collections, the cropped t-shirts by Versace Jeans Couture, Off-white and Balmain cannot be missing, to create a Nineties-style look, playing with the volumes of wide-leg jeans and sneakers for an everyday outfit, or opting for a skirt and a pair of wedges for an even more figurative style of those years.

In this decade, Fiorucci's t-shirts are also born with its now iconic little angels. T-shirts that have become famous, thanks to the stylist of the same name who, understanding the potential of this item of clothing, transforms it into an advertising tool for his own brand. A fashion that has certainly not yet faded, just think of the Play Comme des Garçons and Kenzo t-shirts and other brands of the moment, which ennoble the classic cotton t-shirt by embellishing it with the printing of their own symbols.

The advent of the 2000s brings with it this "logo-mania", with the legitimate belief that a very simple short-sleeved shirt can give a fresh and youthful allure to any look. A real passe-partout therefore, suitable for those who love to dress casually with jeans combined with the beloved logo t-shirts by Balenciaga, Givenchy and Valentino but also for those who can't give up on glamour, wearing a Saint Laurent t-shirt, Jil Sander or Stella McCartney, combined with a blazer and pumps.

Despite their apparent simplicity, women's t-shirts will always be trendy and in step with the times. From the classic white cotton model that saves every outfit, to the tight and oversized ones suitable for different physicalities, up to the t-shirts enriched with ruffles, sequins and embroidery able to make every look more chic, there is really the embarrassment of choice for your shopping on SHOPenauer!
